EHSL Supported Housing reported a broken door latch at one of their Leighton Buzzard properties. The resident reported that the latch mechanism appeared faulty and they were unable to lock their door properly. For a supported housing resident, being unable to secure their home creates significant anxiety and genuine vulnerability.
Unlike a complete lockout, this situation allowed the resident to remain in their property—but without the ability to secure it properly when leaving or sleeping.
Site Assessment
Our locksmith attended the property and assessed the lock mechanism. The latch—the spring-loaded bolt that holds the door closed—had failed, preventing the door from securing properly.
Latch failures can occur for several reasons:
| Failure Mode | Cause |
|---|---|
| Spring fatigue | Repeated use weakens internal spring |
| Mechanism wear | Moving parts degrade over time |
| Misalignment | Door movement causes binding |
| Obstruction | Debris prevents full extension |
| Manufacturing defect | Component failure |
In this case, the mechanism had simply reached the end of its service life. With the latch unable to engage reliably, the door could not be secured.
