Emergency locksmith in Lewisham tonight: who comes, what it costs, how to check us

Yes, someone will come, at night too: we answer around the clock and send locksmiths across Lewisham day and night. There is no call-out charge; you pay for labour by the hour at a published rate, plus any parts, and you see the estimated total in writing before work starts.

How much does a locksmith cost in Lewisham?

Our labour rate is £59 an hour on weekdays between 7am and 6pm, and £69 an hour at all other times, plus VAT: £70.80 or £82.80 an hour once VAT is added. The first hour is the minimum, after which time is charged in 15-minute steps, and travel, parking, fuel and the congestion charge are never added.

Worked through: a weekday door opening that takes no more than an hour and needs no new parts comes to £59 plus VAT, £70.80 in all. A new cylinder, or repair to a damaged door, is priced on the quote as its own line.

Work out the labour cost

We charge labour by the hour, with a one-hour minimum and 15-minute steps after that. Choose when you need the locksmith and how long the job takes; your locksmith tells you the expected time before starting.

Labour £59.00 + VAT £11.80 = £70.80

Labour only. Parts, such as a replacement cylinder, and any door or frame repair are quoted separately, in writing, before work starts. No call-out charge.

How soon can a locksmith get to me in Lewisham?

It depends on where the nearest locksmith is finishing a job, so we give you the time on the call. Night labour, midnight to 7am, is at the higher of the two rates.

Could someone let me in sooner?

In a converted house another resident can often open the street door, leaving only your own. A private landlord or letting agent may hold a spare. If you rent from Lewisham Council, its repairs line will not come out for an ordinary lockout. If anyone inside is in danger, ring 999 first.

Four things move the price

Four things move the price

Four things change what a locksmith job costs: the time of day, the lock and the door, any damage, and parts.

  • The time you need the door openedAn evening, weekend or night call is priced differently from a daytime one, so ask which rate applies.
  • The lock and the doorA standard latch opens differently from an anti-snap cylinder or a multi-point UPVC lock.
  • DamageA snapped key, a forced door or a seized mechanism adds work.
  • PartsA replacement cylinder or lock body is a cost separate from opening the door.

A locksmith quote that does not separate time, lock, damage and parts is harder to check. The protection is the one question you can ask: what is the estimated total, and will the locksmith stop and tell you before it goes over?

How do I know a locksmith is legit before they set off?

Bromley Trading Standards, in the borough next to Lewisham, issued an alert in February 2025 about rogue traders "who drill locks as a first attempt to open the door". Its checklist is worth following with any firm, us included:

  • "Use a locksmith approved by Trading Standards Checked", or find "a local MLA approved locksmith". We are not a member of the Master Locksmiths Association; what you can check about us is set out with our certificates.
  • "Be wary of very cheap advertised prices at the top of an internet search."
  • "Check whether you are dealing directly or with a subcontractor", and ask for the name of the person coming. Ask us that on the call too.
  • "Get a quote for the service you require before you agree to the work." Ours comes in writing first.

Our head office is in East Barnet, north London, and our locksmiths are based and work locally; Companies House lists us as All Service 4 U Limited, 07565878.

If my door or frame gets damaged, who pays?

The written quote says so before work starts, along with the price of any replacement lock. Whether a door opens without harm depends on the lock; non-destructive entry is one of our services. If you rent, photograph the door before and after and pass our itemised report to your landlord or agent. You pay the engineer against the invoice, by card or in cash.

  1. You own the home

Ring us: the door and the lock are yours to decide on, and every option is priced separately on the quote.

  2. You rent privately

Ring us to get back in with proof you live there; a new lock is for your landlord to agree (renting privately).

  3. Lewisham Council is your landlord

A lockout is yours to arrange; after a burglary, with a crime reference, the council changes the lock on 0800 028 2028 (council rules).

  4. A housing association is your landlord

Its own rules apply, not the council's (who pays).

  5. You let or manage the property

We change locks for landlords and agents; a lock changed to keep a tenant out is another matter (what gov.uk says).

  6. A shop or business

Same number, same rates; see our commercial locksmith page.

  1. You ring

Calls are answered 24 hours a day. Our locksmiths travel from their last job, not a depot, so on the call we tell you when the nearest one can reach you.

    • Calls answered every day, 24 hours
    • Live updates on the arrival time
  2. We ask

Which door you are outside, whether you own or rent, what has happened, and what the lock looks like.

  3. We quote in writing

Before work starts: the labour time we expect, named parts with the lock's make and standard, VAT and an estimated total. If the job changes or will run over, we stop and quote again.

  4. At your door

Our locksmith shows ID, and we always ask for proof that you live at the address before a door is opened.

  5. Afterwards

You get an itemised report of the job, and our labour is guaranteed for six months against faulty workmanship.

Who should ring us, and who should ring someone else

We take calls from tenants, owners, landlords, managing agents and small businesses locked out of a home or business premises, or with a lock that has failed or been forced.

  • Locked out of a car

For a car lockout, our auto locksmith service has its own page; this page covers homes and business premises.

  • A smart lock

Fitting a smart lock is planned work, not an emergency: our smart lock page covers it.

Ring for the rate and a written quote

Tell All Services 4U the address and which door. The quote comes in writing, by text or email, before any work starts.

Lewisham Council tenants: a lockout is yours, a lock after a burglary is the council's

If you rent from Lewisham Council, a lockout or a lost key is yours to sort out, but a lock change after a crime is the council's job. More than one Lewisham household in four rents from a social landlord (29.2% in Census 2021), so this decides who you ring.

Lewisham Council repairs: 0800 028 2028. The same number takes emergencies outside office hours: "An emergency repairs service is available outside normal office hours on our usual phone number, 0800 028 2028." The council's repairs responsibilities page lists, as the tenant's job, "replacing keys or locks when keys are lost or you are locked out (unless you live in sheltered or extra care housing)", and, as the council's, "change locks to front or back entry doors with a crime reference number."

I'm a council tenant and I've locked myself out. Will the council come?

Not for an ordinary lockout or lost keys, unless you live in sheltered or extra care housing: the council treats those as the tenant's to arrange and pay for. Ring us, or another locksmith, and keep the itemised report in case your housing officer asks what was done.

A new lock you add yourself stays your responsibility too: the council lists "repairing or replacing additional security locks, even if the previous tenant installed them" among tenants' repairs.

We've been burgled. Will the council change the locks?

Yes, if you are a council tenant and have a crime reference number. Ring the police first (999 if anyone is in danger or the crime is happening, 101 otherwise), then the council on its repairs line: it treats the lock change as an emergency repair, whose maximum response time is "Within 24 hours".

Owners and private tenants arrange the lock themselves, or through their landlord; our burglary repair page covers that work.

Is Lewisham Homes still my landlord?

No. Lewisham Council took over "managing and maintaining more than 19,000 homes across the borough" from Lewisham Homes, and repairs became the council's responsibility from 1 October 2023. The council's rules apply to those homes.

I rent from a housing association. Who pays for a lockout?

Your association decides, not the council. In Lewisham slightly more households rent from housing associations and other social landlords (16.1%) than from the council (13.1%), and the council's list does not apply to them. Your tenancy agreement and your association's repairs line say who pays; if it will not come out, ring us.

The entry phone on our council block has stopped working. Who fixes it?

The council: "communal door entry phones not working" is on its list of repair emergencies, so ring its repairs line.

A flat in a converted house or a block: whose door, and who can change the lock

We open your own front door once you show you live there; the street door belongs to the building, and a new lock on a rented flat is the landlord's to agree. In Lewisham that split matters often: 39.1% of households live in purpose-built flats and another 16.3% in a flat or bedsit inside a converted or shared house (Census 2021).

  • Facing the street

The front door of the house or block

Shared by every flat behind it, and decided on by whoever runs the building: a freeholder, a residents' company or a managing agent. Have their name ready when you ring.

  • Behind it

The door to your own flat

If you own the flat, the choice is yours. If you rent, it can be opened once you prove you live there, and a new lock is agreed with the landlord or agent first.

  • In a block

If your flat door is a fire door

Ask the building's managing agent before the door is drilled or a different lock goes in (the fire door rules).

I rent privately and I'm locked out. Does my landlord have to agree first?

To get you back in, we need proof that you live there, not your landlord's agreement. A new lock is different: it changes your landlord's property, so we quote it and you agree it with your landlord or agent first. Your tenancy agreement may say more about locks and keys; 27.2% of Lewisham households rent privately (Census 2021).

I came home and my landlord had changed the locks. Can they do that?

Usually not. gov.uk gives three signs that a landlord may be guilty of illegal eviction: you "find the locks have been changed", you were not given the notice they must give, or you were evicted without a court order. It also says councils "can prosecute landlords or give a fine of up to £40,000" for harassment or illegal eviction.

What to do next

Contact Lewisham Council's housing team or a housing charity before doing anything to the door, and keep a note of the date and any messages from your landlord. A locksmith asked to open that door for you will still ask for proof that you live there.

Does a fire door change what the locksmith can do?

It changes what should be fitted afterwards. gov.uk's fire door fact sheet, citing the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, says fire doors play "an essential role" against smoke and toxic gases, and one check it lists is "that the door closer shuts the door". It says nothing about locks, so the person responsible for the building should be asked before a fire door's lock is changed. We also carry out fire door inspections.

My front door closes but won't lock. Is that a locksmith job?

Yes. Our written-up job in the borough, "Door Mechanism Replacement: Restoring Front Door Security at a Rental Property in Sydenham", was exactly this: a tenant in Sydenham (Bell Green, SE26) "could not secure their front door because the multipoint locking hooks were failing to engage". Our locksmith found a failed gearbox in the multipoint mechanism and fitted a replacement on site. Read the case study.

Fire door checks in blocks of flats

In a building with two or more homes that is above 11 metres, the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 require the responsible person to check communal fire doors at least every 3 months, and to use best endeavours to check flat entrance doors at least every 12 months.

Lower buildings have no fixed timetable, but gov.uk expects every fire door there, flat entrance doors included, to be kept so that they "are capable of providing adequate protection".

Shut out of your own flat? Ring with the address

Ring with the address and say whether you rent. The hourly rate is given on the call, and the quote reaches you in writing before work starts.

Catford, Sydenham, Blackheath and the rest: the door you will be standing at

Yes, we cover every part of the borough, Catford and Sydenham to Blackheath, Forest Hill, New Cross, Deptford and Brockley, day and night. Blackheath is split between Lewisham and Greenwich (SE3 crosses both), and Downham sits in BR1 although it is in Lewisham; we cover both sides of each line.

Flats are 85.5% of households around Deptford and 80.5% around New Cross, so there a street door and an entry system usually come before your own door. Around Brockley flats are 27.6%, 55.1% of households live in terraced houses, and 62.9% of the homes there with an energy certificate were built before 1930: a timber front door is more likely.

  • Deptford, New Cross and the town centre: 85.5%, 80.5% and 75.0% of households are flats. Expect a block entrance, often with a door entry phone, before you reach your own door.

  • Brockley and Downham: 55.1% and 42.1% of households live in terraced houses, the two highest shares among these neighbourhoods (Census 2021), so the door is more often a house's own.

  • Brockley, the town centre, Forest Hill and Catford: 62.9%, 48.0%, 47.6% and 46.1% of homes with an energy certificate were built before 1930. Older timber doors often carry a rim nightlatch, a mortice lock or both.

  • Bellingham: 14.2% of certified homes were built before 1930, the lowest share here, so a newer door with a cylinder lock is more likely.

  • Sydenham: 67.6% of households are flats and 37.3% rent from a social landlord, so a block door is common there too.

Household figures are Census 2021 at neighbourhood (MSOA) level: each name stands for the MSOA its representative postcode falls in, which is a mapping, not an official boundary. Building age comes from energy performance certificates, so it covers only homes that have one; where fewer than 500 homes in a neighbourhood have one, no figure is given.

Social renting ranges from 53.4% of households around Deptford to 11.4% around Brockley. If you rent from the council or a housing association, your landlord's lock rules decide who pays for a lockout.

New lock or new door in Brockley, Blackheath or another Lewisham conservation area

A new lock on your existing door is ordinary work. Replacing the door itself can need planning permission in Lewisham's conservation areas, which take in Brockley, Blackheath, Forest Hill, Ladywell, Telegraph Hill and more than twenty others on the council's list.

Do I need permission to replace my front door in a conservation area?

If you live in a flat or a subdivided house there, very likely. Lewisham Council says: "Flats or subdivided houses in conservation areas do not have permitted development rights and must seek planning permission to undertake changes to the exterior", and that this includes "replacing windows or doors". Where an Article 4 direction applies, it adds, "planning permission may be required for certain minor changes, such as the replacement of windows and doors".

Brockley, which the council describes as "a leafy speculatively-developed Victorian suburb", has such a direction, made "to encourage the retention of high quality architectural features". Ask the council's planning team before a door is swapped; a lock change on the door you have is a different job.

Should I change the lock after moving in or losing my keys?

It is a sensible step, because you cannot know who else holds a key you did not cut. If you rent, agree it with your landlord or agent first; a Lewisham Council tenant pays for a lock changed after lost keys.

Our quote names the new lock's make and the standard it meets, and prices each option separately. What your insurer expects is in your own policy wording, so read it before you choose. Our lock upgrades page goes further.

Lock standards: BS 3621, TS 007 and PAS 24

Every All Services 4U quote names the lock and the standard it meets. Secured by Design calls BS 3621 "the minimum standard for locks on external or entrance doors", and Union, a lock maker, says "Most insurance policies will require a property to have BS3621 locks on all ground floor external locks".

Union adds that "Multi-point locks comply to a different standard", and your own policy wording sets what your insurer requires, so read it before you choose a lock.

BS 3621, TS 007 and PAS 24, one by one
  • BS 3621:2017

Lock assemblies operated by key from both the inside and the outside of the door. Union says the easiest way to tell if a lock meets it is the Kitemark symbol on the faceplate.

Where it applies: Locks on external and entrance doors

  • TS 007

The Door and Hardware Federation's enhanced security requirements for replacement cylinders and associated security hardware, as Secured by Design describes it.

    Where it applies: Replacement cylinders

  • PAS 24

In Secured by Design's words, "New door assemblies are covered by PAS 24".

All Services 4U is a locksmith and property maintenance company. We handle eight kinds of locksmith job. Opening a door and changing a lock are charged at our published hourly rate; other work, and any parts, are quoted before they start.

  • Locked out: emergency entry

We answer calls at any hour and open locked doors on homes and businesses. Non-destructive entry, which leaves the lock in place where it can be done, is one of our services.

    Emergency entry · Non-destructive entry

  • Lock changes

We change locks after a move, a lost key or a tenant leaving, and write the make and standard of the new lock on the quote.

    Changing locks · Lock upgrades

  • Lost keys

When every key is lost, we can open the door and, if you choose, change the lock so the lost keys no longer work; each is quoted first.

    Lost keys

  • Broken key extraction

We remove a key snapped in the lock and quote any repair to the lock before starting it.

    Broken key extraction

  • Lock and door repairs

We repair failed locks and UPVC multi-point mechanisms, and repair UPVC and timber doors when the lock is not the only damage.

  • Burglary repair and boarding up

After a break-in we quote the work the door needs: a replacement lock, a temporary repair or boarding up. Report the crime to the police first.

  • Landlords and managing agents

We change locks for landlords and agents, including after a bailiff-led eviction, and leave an itemised report for the property file.

Who is accountable: our certificates, our insurance, and how to check them

Which certificates does All Services 4U hold, and how do I check them?

At All Services 4U, we hold ISO 9001:2015 (certificate GB-Q265-1), ISO 14001:2015 (EM-1102) and ISO 45001:2018 (HS-1102) certificates and SafeContractor approval (SY1948). We also hold Once For All Health & Safety and Constructionline Gold, and we are NICEIC approved for our electrical work. Ask us for a copy of any certificate and we send it.

Are locksmiths regulated in the UK, and is All Services 4U MLA approved?

Locksmiths are not regulated by the Government in the UK, and All Services 4U is not a member of the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA). The MLA, the trade's voluntary body, says "the locksmithing industry is not regulated in any way by the Government in the United Kingdom".

What you can check about All Services 4U instead: our company number at Companies House (07565878), our ISO 9001 and SafeContractor certificates with their issuers, and our published hourly rates. Our insurance confirmation is sent on request, and you can ask on the call which DBS check the person attending holds.
